I Hate Theory IV....
Ok, so I really don't, well, I don't love it, but I don't hate it. (Seems like I really like commas too) I actually think of it as a fun class. Not fun "I can't wait to go to class" but fun "I wonder what the hell is gonna happen today." I started thinking this after class today. We were talking about pentatonic scales - a 5 note scale without half steps used in blues - and Dr. Broman started giving us examples. One was the Balinese Gamelan, another was a class member playing the guitar with one of out TA's playing the string bass (such a sexy instrument...), then came the examples that Broman burned to a CD. We were all close to asleep when the Aretha Franklin song from The Blues Brothers came on. You know, the restaurant scene. So we were all sitting there jammin' to Aretha, totally not paying attention to the way the pentatonic scale was being used. Then came the best song. Wannabe, by you guessed it, The Spice Girls. Suffice it to say there was lots of laughter and people making asses out of themselves chair dancing. It was a grand ol' time! We were sad because there was no ABBA. Then we thought about it, and realized what a cool loser (oxymoron, i know) our theory Prof. is. Sitting around listening to popish songs and analyzing chord progressions and notes. He was even playing The Spice Girls on the piano. That crazy Swede!
We're just waiting for the day that we hear some M.C. Hammer, Vanilla Ice, or some New Kids on the Block.....
Oh, and if you're now singing Wannabe or any of the above mentioned songs, I'm not sorry, it's been in my head for the past 5 hours.
