Seems to be a Trend

Wed. I had to drive back to the 'Boro, ok Beavercreek, to see a doctor for my thyroid. See since the whole thyroid thing runs in my Mom's side of the family, and I'm female, we decided to have it tested. So we made an appointment in Nov. and the earliest one they had was Feb. 9th. I get there and the Doc, does the grab and feel around the neck thing. And we talk about family history and what not. After the grab around the neck thing the doc discovers that my thyroid is about 3-4 times bigger than it should be. Whee!!! As a point of reference, your thyroid is about the size of your thumb from the top most joint up. Mine is 3 or 4.

If you don't know, the only thing the thyroid does is control metabolism and with my thyroid as huge as it is, something in my brain is saying "ALERT ALERT! foreign object in the neck" and seeing my thyroid as a foreign body that needs to get killed. To counteract the antibodies my body is making to fight my thyroid, my thyroid is getting larger because my brain is also saying that i need more of the metabolism hormone thinger.

He then takes me for an ultrasound and discovers that its a girl thyroid, ok that was bad, but that's what he said. Getting an ultrasound of your neck is funny feeling. I saw arteries and veins and and my throat and my HUGE thyroid. Well, my Dad and the doc did, my head was puside down in a weird angle. After discovering that I had no nodules on my thyroids, which is good because if I did it could be cancer, he said that was all he could do that day. I have to go get some more bloodwork done to determine if my thyroid is overworking or underworking and then get some bloodwork done in late May and go back to his office in early June to see if there are any trends in the blood stuff. I can't seem to make it through a Spring semester of school without going home all the time to see a doctor.

Hopefully when they do put me on medicine it will help with the weight thing, I'm getting sick of it. Also this isn't all that uncommon, 1 in 10 females have it. So I'm not going to die or anything, so don't worry. Also, I blame the fact that my Mom's maiden name is Kennedy, that's gotta have something to do with it, even though there's no relation and she doesn't have the problem :)
